U. S. regulators are ordering Pfizer Inc. and Eli Lilly & Co. to immediately stop selling Levitra to the American public.
In a letter to the U. Food and Drug Administration, the FDA said the drug maker has no right to sell the drug to American consumers.
Levitra is prescribed for the treatment of male erectile dysfunction in men. It works by increasing blood flow to the penis. It's approved for use in the United States and Canada by the U. Food and Drug Administration in February 2004.
Pfizer, the world's largest pharmaceutical company, is seeking FDA approval for its use in the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
The agency is also looking into Lilly's marketing efforts for Levitra, which treats an enlarged prostate.
"We've seen tremendous interest from patients, doctors and patients who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer, and this drug has become a lifesaver for patients with this disease," said Dr. Peter K. Stelter, chairman and chief executive of Lilly's clinical development division, which produces Levitra. "This new drug is the first FDA-approved for this indication for the treatment of erectile dysfunction."
The company has not responded to a request for comment.

The study, which was called, included more than 3,500 men with erectile dysfunction who were followed for 6 months.
The men who were followed were randomly assigned to receive either a placebo pill or a treatment that did not contain any drugs that can increase blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Men in the placebo group were monitored closely.
The study also included a comparison group of men who received the medication on a daily basis for 3 months and men who did not receive the medication for any length of time.
The FDA said it was investigating the study and will release results on Monday. Lilly has not responded to a request for comment.
